I'm Larry Via. I'm a 40 year resident of Collier County
coming here from Sarasota in 1973. I'm retired and
currently National Vice Commander AMVETS which
stands for (American Veterans). We are one of the 4
largest Veterans Service Organizations which includes,
the American Legion, VFW, DAV and AMVETS.
I just returned late yesterday from meetings in
Washington D.C. with the House & Senate committee on
Veterans Affairs so I am not properly prepared but I would
like to address the proposed VA nursing home in Collier
County.
As past Commander of Florida AMVETS I
was personally involved in all the VA Nursing homes
in Florida including the latest one the "Clyde Lassen VA
home in St Augustine". This is a state of the art facility
and beautifully designed to fit in with the local architecture.
There also is a new VA home in Pell City Alabama which
was involved in from ground breaking to opening
ceremony.
All are clean, well maintained and well staffed. We all
have volunteers at most VA facilities throughout the
country on a daily basis.
I was hoping to have my friend Peter Thomas here and I
have not had time to consult with my fellow constituents
but I'm sure I can speak for all of us and ask that you do
everything possible to see that this VA facility is built in
Collier County to provide for the many, many Veteran in
southwest Florida.
