PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, on behalf of the residents of Collier County, the Board of Collier County Commissioners
would like to honor the work of the Cancer Alliance of Nap/es (CAN); and,
WHEREAS, In 2002, a group of volunteers saw a grave need in our community to offer assistance to
cancer stricken families and individuals whose lives were being turned upside down
financially and emotionally, creating CAN; and,
WHEREAS, After she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, Jane Waltzer thought
about how fortunate she was to have the emotional and financial means to get through
treatment, remarking to her husband that they were the "lucky ones;"and,
WHEREAS, Her husband, dermatologist Dr. Joel Waltzer, saw a letter in the newspaper thanking
CAN for the work they do in the community and, during a yoga c/ass heard yoga
instructor Kiersten Mooney talk about how one of the tenets of yoga is helping others;
and,
WHEREAS, The Waltzers and Kiersten Mooney, owner of Bala Vinyasa Yoga in North Nap/es, joined
together to give back, using yoga to help CAN; and,
WHEREAS, Their first event to raise money for the Cancer Alliance of Naples, called Jane CAN,
brought in $35,000 for the organization in 2014; and,
WHEREAS, The trio's second fundraiser, called Yoga CAN, drew 350 people and teachers from four
yoga studios to the Nap/es Beach Hotel on March 29, 2015, to practice yoga and give
back to CAN; and,
WHEREAS, Yoga CAN raised more than $58,000 that the Cancer Alliance of Naples will give to
beneficiaries, paying rent and utilities for people suffering from cancer and going through
chemo and radiation, as well as food and gas cards; and,
WHEREAS, The Board of Collier County Commissioners would like to officially recognize the Cancer
Alliance of Nap/es, the Waltzers and Kiersten Mooney for their dedicated service to
he/ping those with cancer in the community.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proc/aimed that the Collier County Board of County Commissioners hereby honors
the work of the Cancer Alliance of Nap/es, and the Waltzers and Kiersten Mooney for their dedication to
raising money through Yoga CAN.
