Backup Documents 03/10/2015 Item # 4D PROCLAMATION D WHEREAS, bicycling plays an important role in the lives of millions of Floridians by providing an alternative and economical means of transportation to work, school, shopping, parks, and promotes tourism; and WHEREAS, bicycle usage promotes health and wellness and helps to encourage citizens to develop habits of physical activity to become or stay fit; and WHEREAS, the riding of bicycles provide an alternate and economical means of transportation to work, thus increasing access to employment, and increased bicycle usage can he/p provide mobility for those without access to a motor vehicle, and increases existing rood and parking capacities when people choose bicycling for utilitarian trips, reducing the number of automobiles on the road; and WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation and many local governments throughout the state have adopted goals and policies to develop a multimodal transportation system that supports transportation alternatives, including the bicycle, and encourages the use of bicycles for transportation on Florida's roadways; and, WHEREAS, roadway safety for vulnerable road users, including bicyclists, has been elevated to a critical priority by the Florida Department of Transportation; and WHEREAS, Naples Pathways Coalition is a non-profit advocacy group working for a fully integrated transportation network of sidewalks, bike lanes, and multi-use pathways to be used by bicyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorized users throughout Naples and Collier County; and, WHEREAS, Naples Pathways Coalition is working with county and state agencies to educate bicyclists and motorists to observe all traffic laws and share the road to improve cycling conditions on the roadways; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that March be designated as BICYCLE AWARENESS AND SAFETY MONTH IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS .10th Day of March ^�) Il_ BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ' .�/�; COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA 1.0110w � TIM NANCE, CHAIRMAN
