Backup Documents 02/24/2015 Item # 4C 4C PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the Collier County Recycling Ordinance Number 2009-56, established the Waste Reduction Awards Program (the WRAP award); and, WHEREAS, the WRAP award recognizes businesses, institutions, and multi-family residences for enhanced and innovative recycling programs; and, WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners is p/eased to recognize Publix and its Store #1458 for contributing to the greater goad of Collier County by advocating recycling, thereby he/ping to prolong the usable life of the Collier County Landfill; and, WHEREAS, the Publix recycling program includes • Offering customers the in-store option of recycling of paper and plastic bags, plastic sleeves from dry cleaning and newspapers, and shrink wrap. • Recycling more than 220,500 tons of cardboard,' 4,100 tons of wax cardboard,' 3,650 tons of mixed paper; and nearly 9 tons of mixed plastic in 2014. • Being the first regional supermarket pharmacy to introduce prescription vials made from pre- and post-consumer recycled PET plastic, allowing customers to recycle the vials by bringing them back to their Publix Pharmacy. More than 6 million prescription vials have been recycled through this program. WHEREAS, the WRAP award program includes a framed certificate, a trophy, and space on the county's website showcasing eco-friendly business practices and recycling programs; and, WHEREAS, the Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Department congratulates Mr. Scot Oehmigen, Publix Store #1458 Manager; Kim Brunson, Publix Recycling and Solid Waste Program Manager; and all Publix associates for their outstanding efforts to promote waste reduction and recycling, and setting a positive example for other grocery and supermarket stores. Their initiatives will have a significant effect on sustaining the usable life of the Collier County Landfill and protecting the environment.
