Backup Documents 01/28/2014 Item # 4C 4 ( j PROCLAMATION V WHEREAS, Building Homes for Heroes, a national nonprofit organization founded in 2006, is strongly committed to supporting the brave men and women who have returned home from the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan with severe wounds and disabilities; and, WHEREAS, Building Homes for Heroes has been at the forefront of making a significant difference in the lives of these wounded men and women by building or modifying existing homes to meet the needs of these brave individuals who selflessly served our country; and, WHEREAS, these mortgage-free homes help remove the financial burden on the families, restore the individual's freedom and enable the veteran to lead a more productive and independent civilian life; and, WHEREAS, in 2013, Building Homes for Heroes celebrated the donation of 25 new homes in ten states, one of the recipients being Sergeant Brent Hernandez of Collier County; and, WHEREAS, Sgt. Hernandez was severely wounded in Afghanistan 13 days into his deployment when his aircraft crashed, leaving him with critical internal injuries, a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder; and, WHEREAS, during his service, he received the Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (twice), National Defense Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Ranger Tab, Combat Infantry Badge and Army Parachutist Badge; and, WHEREAS, Sgt. Hernandez, his wife Katy and their daughters, Makennah and Annastyn, were presented with the keys to their new home on December 14, 2013 thanks to the support of Building Homes for Heroes and its local partners, Chase Bank and Manhattan Construction. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that Building Homes for Heroes, Chase Bank and Manhattan Construction be recognized for their generous donation and Sgt.
