Bob Laird, Chairman, called the regular monthly meeting of the Collier County EMSAC
Committee to order on Wednesday, July 26, 2000.
The minutes of the June 28 meeting were moved, second and approved.
OLD BUSINESS:
Fay Biles inquired if Chief Flagg would like the Advisory Council to make a statement or
write a letter to the Commission on behalf of EMS at the Budget Hearings scheduled for
September. Chief Flagg advised that limited funding was available this year which
necessitated the need to cut multiple projects.
NEW BUSINESS:
The question was asked, "Why do helicopters spend so much time transporting from
Marco?"
Commander Aguilera explained the media's conception that the helicopter spends more
time in Marco than any other area is not correct. The helicopter serves all rural areas
equally. If a call comes into any rural area and the units are busy with calls, then the
helicopter responds. The helicopter always responds to a trauma call. On Marco Island
there is only one unit stationed there. Immokalee and Ochopee each have two units. It is
better to send the helicopter to Marco, if it is not on a call elsewhere, than to have a unit
come off the island.
The new helicopter has arrived! On August 1, at the Board of Commissioners meeting, it
will land in the field by Building "F" for viewing.
The dedication for the new helicopter is scheduled for September 19th, 2000 at 9:00 A.M.
at the Vineyards Community Park 6231 Arbor Boulevard West.
In the 2000/ 2001 budget process the budget for an Port of the Islands, six Captain
positions, and a cardiac medication was cut. The Gray Oaks Station was approved for
January 1, 2001 provided the EMS Billing Department collects $160,000 beyond what
was forecast. If they do not, the start date will be delayed until June 1, 2001.
Chief Flagg was asked what her priorities for the new budget would be. They are:
1. New medication put back into the budget if money available.
2. Captains positions _
3. Growth Management station at Gray Oaks
4. Station at I-75 and St. Rt. 29
5. Station at Port of Isles.
Discussion followed on a letter of support being presented to the Commissioners.
Fay Biles moved the letter be written in support of EMS, 2nd and passed.
There is a possibility the Gray Oaks sub-division will be redistricted into the North
Naples Fire District. In the event this takes place the Gray Oaks Station will be shared by
North Naples and EMS. East Naples would withdraw from the project.
NEW BUSINESS:
The Basic Water Rescue class for Command Staff has been completed.
The Pediatric Life Support class is complete.
Data Collection: Dave Stedman is the new Data Collection Manager.
Two stations are sending back live data. They will continue to use both systems until all
of the "kinks" are worked out. Then an interface will be complete with the EMS Billing
Department.
The Florida State EMS Chief, Dino Villani, has resigned his position in Tallahassee,
Florida. A national search will be conducted for his replacement.
Eric West was in attendance. He had sent a letter in for a position on the Advisory
Board, but his letter was not received at the Board until after the deadline.
Meeting adjourned.
