The regular monthly meeting of the Collier County EMSAC committee was called to
order on Wednesday, March 29, 2000 by Bob Laird Chairman.
The minutes of the January 26, 2000 meeting were approved.
Chief Tobin introduced Laura Pacter, North Naples Fire Public Information Officer.
OLD BUSINESS
Chief Flagg gave an update on American Heart Association CPR Day 2000 to be held
Saturday, April 29 from 9:00 AM through 2:00 PM at Naples High School. CPR will be
provided to the community members free of charge. Classes will commence every 30
minutes. The goal for the day will be to certify 1000 participants in CPR. Naples
Community Hospital will provide blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screening.
This event will be held nation wide.
NEW BUSINESS
Chief Flagg announced the Emergency Services Department has a web site on the inter-
net and wanted everyone to view it. It can be reached at http://co_collierfl,us. Click on
Emergency Services Department to view the web page.
A discussion was held on a recent accident, at the county line, where the wrong
helicopter unit was dispatched to the call.
Because of challenges with recent dispatches, the EMS organization has been placed on
"disaster communications mode". All units monitor the radio from 0730 to 2200 hours.
Watch Commanders monitor the radio from 2200 hours to 0730.
Chairman Laird suggested the next meeting be held at the Communications Center. Gary
Young will look into a room to hold the meeting. Chief Tobin suggested the May
meeting be held at the North Naples Fire Department visit the ALS engine program, talk
with the firefighters and EMS paramedic/firefighters that participate. Captain Reed
volunteered to have the June meeting at the City of Naples Police and Emergency
Services facility.
Another class of EMS Paramedic/firefighters has graduated from the fire academy. As
more paramedics become firefighters and firefighters become paramedics the single
engine program can expand.
Manatee County invited Chief Flagg and Operations Chief Page from Collier County
EMS and Chief Tobin and Chief Webb from North Naples Fire Department to give a
presentation of the Single Engine Program. They are very interested in the single engine
concept.
Chief Pilot Anton Burtscher and Captain Walter Kopka are traveling to Metro Aviation,
in Shreveport, Louisiana to look at the design of the new EC 135 twin engine helicopter.
It should be ready by the end of the year. A new pilot, Tracy Edmonson, has been hired
which brings the total pilots on duty to six.
Budget process has begun. EMS is looking at different locations, based on call volume
and the Growth Management Plan. Port of Isles, I-75 and State Route 29, & Grey
Oaks.
Leo Ochs former Support Services Administrator is now the Administrator of Public
Services. He is taking the place of Thomas 011iff, who has been promoted to the new
County Manager. Mr. 011iff has also posted the position of Emergency Services
Administrator. Chief Flagg has declined to apply for the position.
At the Board of County Commissioners May 9`h meeting a Proclamation will be read
proclaiming the week as EMS week in Collier County. Phoenix Awards will also be
presented to EMS colleagues by a survivor who was resuscitated and brought back to life.
Kathryn Godfrey thanked Chief Flagg for her recent ride with a Commander, she
thought it was very interesting.
