TO: Black Affairs Advisory Board, Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board, Endorsers and Prospective Endorsers He-rrl6-:a.OT1ifft!te. Chairperson Black B~itt~~rY Board Anna I. Rodriguez, ~hairperson Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board FROM: DATE: June 3, 1994 RE: HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIQliEROPOJWL_DISCUSSIONS Wednesday, June 22. 1994 - 7:00 P.M. County Commissioners' Board Room First, we highly appreciate your efforts towards making the Human Rights Commmission (HRC) Proposal Presentation a big success! It was successful by nearly all accounts because (1) your endorsements (over 30 organizations and 240 individuals) reflected a broad constituency and (2) State and local human rights professionals, along with some of you, did outstanding jobs of clarifying the obvious need for, and advantages of having a local human rights agency. Sometimes, as in this case, one successful activity does not result in accomplishing the mission. However, we believe that appropriat.e and immediate follow-up activities will result in the creation of a Collier County HRC. Secondly, we ask that you please attend the above meeting. It will focus on identifying means of increasing and demonstrating the broad based support that exists for the creation of a Collier County Human Rights Commission. In the interim, CONTINUE the following activities as appropriate: L1L Endorsements - Mail, deliver or FAX endorsements to Tom Whitecotton (BAAB Staff Liaison), Director of Human Resources - Collier County Government Complex - Admin. Building, Fifth Floor - Naples, Florida, 33962. (FAX: 774- 8048 or 775-5008; Telephone: 774-8759). 121- Petition SiEr~es - Same procedures as Endorsements. (3) Contact County Commissioners to express your support for the establishment of the Human Rights Commission. They may be contacted as follows: Mail and Physical Address: Board of County Commissioners Collier County Government Center 3301 Tamiami Trail East Admin. Building, Third Floor Naples, Florida 33962 Telephone and Fax Numbers: 774-8393 Chairman, Commissioner Constantine 774-8391 Vice Chairwoman, Commissioner Matthews 774-8389 Commissioner Norris 774-8392 Commissioner Saunders 774-8390 Commissioner Volpe 774-3602 FAX Thirdly, and lastly, the protections to be expected from our own HRC will definitely benefit the overwhelming majority of Collier residents, and not just "minorities" as some say or think. A great majority of discrimination complaints, at least in our area, are not based on race or national origin. This is reflected by the below data on charges that were filed with the Miami District Office of the EEOC during fiscal year 1993. Cateltory Number % of Total Charltes Sex 1337 22 Age 1239 20 Race 1217 20 Disabi I i'l,y 738 12 National Origin 721 12 Retaliation (*) 598 10 Religion 132 2 Other 210 3 ------ Totals 6192 101 (Due to Rounding) *= A mixture of categories Some of the highlights of the above data indicate: 1. Sex and Age discrimination accounted for 42% of all charges. 2. Sex, Age and Disability totalled 54% of all charges. 3. Disability was the basis for one (1) in eight (8) charges. 4. One (1) ln five (5) charges was based on race. 5. One (1) ln eight (8) charges was based on national origin. 6. Race and national origin combined accounted for only 32% (1 in 3) of all charges. Come and/or send representatives to the meeting to demonstrate broad support and provide input on future initiatives! Let the positive Collier County speak and be counted. Call Henry (642-4759) or Anna (434-1975) for additional information or to make suggestions and comments. YOUR ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT. IS CRITICAL TQTHE SUCCESS OF THIS INITIATIVE!!
