MINUTES OF THE COLLIER COUNTY
HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL PRESERVATION BOARD MEETING
Naples, Florida — October 17, 2025
LET IT BE REMEMBERED, the Collier County Historical Archaeological Preservation
Board, in and for the County of Collier, having conducted business herein, met on this date
at 9:30 A.M. in REGULAR SESSION at the Collier County Growth Management
Community Department Building, Conference Room #609/610, 2800 Horseshoe Drive
North, Naples, Florida, with the following members present:

Any persons wishing to appeal any decision made by this Board with respect to any
matter considered at this meeting will need a record of the proceedings, and may need to
ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which includes the testimony
and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based.
1. CALL TO ORDER - HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL PRESERVATION
BOARD MEETING PRESIDING
a. Meeting called to order at 9:30 A.M. Roll call conducted.
2. ADDENDA TO THE AGENDA
Motion to add Item C under New Business:
Discussion on future HAPB field trips.

4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JULY 18, 2025 (AMENDED)
Discussion included concerns about:
Accuracy of attendance (e.g., Elizabeth listed but possibly absent).
Stylistic inconsistencies (e.g., date formatting).
Transfer between minute takers causing confusion.
Suggestion to review Zoom/webinar recording for verification.
Motion to defer approval of July 18 minutes pending review of recording and submission
of comments by October 30, 2025.

5. OLD BUSINESS
A. Gore Nature Center – Historical Designation Application Presentation by Summer
Araque, Supervisor, Conservation Collier.
Property acquired August 8, 2025 (10-acre parcel within 279-acre preserve).
Historical designation sought for dwelling, individual (Dr. Robert H. Gore III),
and immediate lot.
Architectural style: Florida cracker-style home built in 1987.
Criteria met: cultural significance, architectural distinction, association with Dr.
Gore’s contributions to conservation and education.
ADA-accessible ramp planned; public access phased over 2–3 years.
Presentation was briefly delayed due to technical issues with laptop.
Guest speaker Linda Wineland described “pointer trees” used by Native peoples
and shared personal history with Dr. Gore.
Amanda Townsend contextualized the architectural movement of the 1980s and
Dr. Gore’s role in reviving traditional Florida styles.

RECOMMENDATION GRANTED
Motion: Recommend approval of historic designation for the dwelling, individual, and
10-acre lot, subject to criteria presented in the application and presentation.

6. NEW BUSINESS
A. Cultural Assessment – Cherrywood Phase II (Site 8CR1671) Presentation by Ryan
Franklin (Archaeological and Historical Conservancy) and Greg Fisero (Developer).
Phase 1 revealed site 8CR1671 (Cherrywood One); Phase 2 found sparse ceramic
scatter, no significant deposits.
Big Hackberry site (8CR872) confirmed to be west of parcel; initial mapping
error corrected.
Site 8CR1671 deemed ineligible for NRHP.
Commitment to report future discoveries to Division of Historic Resources.

Motion: Accept cultural assessment findings for Cherrywood Phase II.

B. HAPB Candidate Application – Laura Burke
Voted to approve and passed unanimously.
C. Future HAPB Field Trips
Added to agenda; Ray Bellows discussed the HAPB visiting either the Marco Island
Historical Museum or the Train Depot as potential sites for future field trips.
The HAPB discussed that the Marco Island Historical Museum will be either in
November or December.
The visit to the Train Depot could be in January or February. Amanda Townsend added
she might add the Palm Cottage site onto the Train Depot field trip
