Agenda 05/27/2025 Item #16A20 (Approve the Naples Zoo, Inc.'s proposed project for the "Safari Canyon" project)5/27/2025 Item # 16.A.20 ID# 2025-1827 Executive Summary Recommendation to approve the Naples Zoo, Inc.'s proposed project for the "Safari Canyon" project to allow the Zoo to move forward with the proposed improvements. OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners (Board) to approve the "Safari Canyon" project for the Naples Zoo and allow the Zoo to move forward with the proposed improvements. CONSIDERATIONS: In accordance with Article 9. A of the lease agreement between the Board of County Commissioners and the Naples Zoo, the Zoo is to obtain prior Board approval before initiating modifications, alterations, additions, and improvements to the Zoo property if said work is in excess of $25,000. The President/CEO of the zoo has submitted a written request for permission to improve property adjacent to the existing "Safari Canyon," the open-air theater where staff provide nature programs and live shows, exhibiting live animals from the zoo. The proposed changes include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: - Construction of north and south open-air animal holding/containment structures with separate cages and den enclosures - Construction of walkways for animal care staff. The zoo received approval for a site development plan amendment to add these amenities in 2021 (PL20210000509), but construction has been delayed until now. However, to obtain the building permits for these improvements, Board approval is required. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact associated with this approval. The Zoo is responsible for all construction costs associated with this project. GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact associated with this request. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to form and legality, and requires a majority vote for approval. - DDP RECOMMENDATIONS: To approve the Naples Zoo project known as "Safari Canyon" and allow the Zoo to construct the proposed improvements.
