Executive Summary
Recommendation to approve an Agreement between Collier County, the Marco Island Historical Society, Inc., and the
Calusa Garden Club of Marco Island for revitalization of the Pioneer Garden at the Marco Island Historical Museum.
OBJECTIVE: To maintain beautiful and educational museum facilities at minimal cost to the County through
community partnerships.
CONSIDERATIONS: The Marco Island Historical Museum uses all available spaces to tell the history of the island.
After Hurricane Irma toppled a large tree in the Museum parking lot, the Museum, the Historical Society, and the
Garden Club worked together to create a demonstration Pioneer Garden in the vacated space. The Society installed
signage identifying the plantings in the space and explaining their uses in pioneer life. Over time the plantings have aged
out, and the Garden is now in need of refurbishment.
The Parties have worked together to create an Agreement memorializing each party’s responsibilities in this renewed
venture. Under the terms of the Agreement, the Museum agrees to maintain the access and irrigation already established
at the site of the Pioneer Garden, and the Society and the Club agree to split the cost of the project at a maximum of
$500 each. The Club will provide volunteers to plant and maintain the Garden. The Agreement provides that the Club
will indemnify the County and has provided appropriate insurance coverage which has been reviewed and approved by
the County’s Risk Management Department.
Staff recommends that the Board approve the Agreement and authorize the Chairman to sign.
This action supports the Strategic Plan Objective to provide quality public amenities and recreational opportunities
under the Focus Area of Quality of Place.
FISCAL IMPACT: There is no fiscal impact to the County related to this action.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no impact to the Growth Management Plan related to this action.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item is approved as to form and legality and requires a majority vote for approval.
