Agenda 02/25/2025 Item # 4B (Proclamations - Lung cancer Screening Awarenes Day)PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with an estimated
124,730 deaths in 2024; and
WHEREAS, early detection through low -dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening can reduce
lung cancer mortality by up to 20%; and
WHEREAS, despite medical recommendations, only 5-15% of eligible individuals are actually screened
for lung cancer each year, leading to late -stage diagnoses and poorer survival rates; and
WHEREAS, expanding access to lung cancer screening and raising awareness of its benefits are critical
to reducing mortality and ensuring that all eligible individuals are screened and diagnosed
at an earlier, more treatable stage; and
WHEREAS, Physicians Regional Healthcare System, along with healthcare providers across Florida, is
dedicated to helping guide patients through the lung cancer screening process, from risk
assessment and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support; and
WHEREAS, increasing access to screening and ensuring that all eligible Floridians are informed of their
risk factors are essential for improving early detection, reducing the burden of lung cancer,
and saving lives across the State of Florida;
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that November 1, 2025, be designated as
LUNG CANCER SCREENING AWARENESS DAY
