Item # 16.E.5
ID# 2025-210
Executive Summary
Recommendation to approve and authorize the Chairman to execute the Third Extension and Amendment to the Service-
Learning Agreement between the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees and the Collier County Board of
County Commissioners through January 24, 2029.
OBJECTIVE: To continue to provide opportunities to students at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) to engage in
service learning within the departments and divisions of Collier County BCC (the County).
CONSIDERATIONS: FGCU, through its Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement, looks for opportunities in
the community through service organizations that can provide service learning to its students. Service-learning is an
experientially based teaching methodology which combines classroom instruction with community action. Through
service-learning, students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences
that meet actual community needs.
The Service-Learning Agreement, initially approved in January 2017, clearly outlined the responsibilities of the
University, the County and the FGCU Students who will participate in the program and provided for a two-year fixed
term for the agreement based on the date of execution, with two one-year renewals. The agreement was renewed in
January 2019. In January 2020, FGCU and the County entered into a second extension agreement through January 24,
2025. It is beneficial to both organizations to execute a third extension and amendment, signed by both parties,
extending the agreement five (5) additional years, ending on January 24, 2029. This Amendment also delegates
authority to the County Manager or her designee to execute future amendments to extend the term of the Agreement.
