BCC Agenda 07/23/2024 Item #16B 2 (Accepting a donation of 45 live plants for the Collier County Sheriff's Gun Range from Naples Botanical Gardens)07/23/2024
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to accept a donation of 45 native plants for the Collier County Sheriff's Gun Range from
the Naples Botanical Gardens, the donating organization.
OBJECTIVE: To receive the donation of native plans to contribute to the buffering of the Collier County
Sheriff’s gun range.
CONSIDERATIONS: On June 17, 2024, the County received a proposal from the Naples Botanical Garden
(NBG) offering 45 native plants to be utilized at the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) gun range, located in
eastern Collier County. NBG advised they would donate the plant material; however, transport, installation and
irrigation would need to be addressed. At the June 20, 2024, Collier County Budget Workshop, a discussion
ensued regarding the possibility of adding plant material to the buffer at the Collier County Sheriff’s gun range
located in eastern Collier County. At that time, the Sheriff’s Office indicated that would be a good use of inmate
labor. Further coordination efforts have ensued. If approved by the Board, NBG will supply the plant material and
provide technical expertise on the specific plant placement along the berm; Collier County Road, Bridge &
Stormwater Maintenance Division will transport the plant material from NBG to the gun range; and the CCSO will
coordinate installation by inmate labor and take responsibility for the ongoing irrigation required for the plant
material to thrive.
NBG has collaborated with the County on numerous other projects including beach dune planting, stormwater
swales and median landscaping.
FISCAL IMPACT: The costs to transport these items inclusive of labor, equipment and fuel will not exceed $500
and is available in the Road and Bridge Fund (1001). Source of funding is general fund.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: This item is consistent with the Conservation and Coastal Management
Element of the Collier County Growth Management Plan.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to form and
legality and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
RECOMMENDATION: To accept the donation from the Naples Botanical Garden of 45 native plans to enhance
the buffer at the Collier County Sheriff’s Office gun range in eastern Collier County.

The existing berm at the site is 400 linear feet and requires sound buffering. There is
existing irrigation and requires shrubs that can tolerate full sun.
•Nature-based sound abatement.14 x 25-gallon and 13 x 15-gallon Sweet Viburnum, and
18 x 15-gallon Walter's Viburnum
•The spacing should be distanced according to having the best distribution of various
initial plant sizes and heights and irrigation coverage. We would recommend a mix of the
two species creating a natural look.
•A Garden Representative will assist with recommending plant positions at the site
during installation.
Vibranium species spaced evenly by 400 ft No Cost
Naples Botanical Garden appreciates the many ways we have collaborated with Collier
