Backup Documents 04/23/2024 Item # 4C 4C PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, a naturally starlit night sky is a shared heritage that inspires awe and fosters interest in science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts, especially among young people; and WHEREAS, light pollution is artificial light that alters natural cycles of light and dark in the environment in ways that negatively impact wildlife, human well-being and safety, and wastes energy; and WHEREAS, areas of the Greater Everglades with limited light pollution, including Big Cypress National Preserve, a certified International Dark Sky Place, attract visitors to Collier County; and WHEREAS, artificial light acts as a form of habitat loss when it diminishes natural darkness needed by diurnal and nocturnal species; and WHEREAS, solving light pollution includes promoting awareness on considerate neighbor and ecology-responsible lighting practices; and WHEREAS, DarkSky International designated April 2 to April 8, 2024, as "International Dark Sky Week 2024" to draw awareness to light pollution, its impacts, and solutions; and WHEREAS, Collier County wishes to extend awareness to include all of April 2024 to encourage ample opportunity for public outreach; NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that April 2024 be designated as EVERGLADES DARK SKY MONTH IN COLLIER COUNTY DONE AND ORDERED THIS 23rd Day of April 2024. -✓✓ BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COLLIER COUNT_Y,IFLORIDA6 CHRIS HALL, CHAIRMAN
