EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to authorize the Domestic Animal Services Division to participate in the Seniors for
Seniors Program provided by For the Love of Cats which pays the adoption costs for seniors to adopt senior
cats to increase cat adoptions.
OBJECTIVE: To increase adoptions of senior cats for the Domestic Animal Services Division (DAS) to both
reduce the animal population at the shelter, as well as reduce overall costs to the general fund.
CONSIDERATIONS: DAS has various programs to help increase adoption rates for the animals in their care. It’s
estimated that this program began about ten (10) years ago and DAS began participating to help increase adoptions.
For the Love of Cats created the Seniors for Seniors Program in 2010 which pays for the adoption fee and a
complete care kit for any senior cat adopted by a senior citizen. Additionally, For the Love of Cats currently are
providing gift cards to each adopter to help with the initial costs of caring for their new feline companion. DA S
does not provide gift cards.

The Seniors for Seniors Program plays a vital role in promoting the senior cats to potential senior adopters, as well
as, fostering positive connections and relationships between seniors and senior animals. This has increased the
overall adoption rates.
DAS began working with Seniors for Seniors Program since 2010. Between 2010 through 2023, the Seniors for
Seniors Program has paid a total of $22,576 for 206 cats.
FISCAL IMPACT: The are no costs to Domestic Animal Services. All adoption fees are paid by the Love of the
Cats, so revenue is received from the adoptions.
It is anticipated that this will save approximately $2,000 per fiscal year by participating in this program. The $2,000
is general fund revenue paid for by the For the Love of Cats.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no Growth Management impact associated with this action.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to form and
legality and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
