PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, more than 507,000 Floridians served the nation during the Vietnam era,
1,280 sacrificed their lives, and 81 Floridians are still listed as missing in
action; and
WHEREAS, of the 246 service members who were awarded the Medal of Honor, the
nation's highest military award, nine were Floridians; and
WHEREAS, Floridians served in Vietnam from the beginning to the end, with a Floridian
being one of the first casualties of the war in 1961 and one of the last in
1975; and
WHEREAS, Vietnam War Veterans have continued to serve the United States, the State
of Florida, and the County of Collier honorably and with distinction. The many
members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars are deserving of public support and
appreciation of their patriotic service; and
WHEREAS, the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who returned from Vietnam deserve
the recognition and praise that was so routinely awarded returning servicemen
and women in earlier wars; and
WHEREAS, it is especially important that the extraordinary contributions of Florida's and
Collier County's Vietnam War Veterans and the sacrifice of their families be
remembered and recognized; and

NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that March 29, 2024, be designated as
VIETNAM WAR VETERANS DAY IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 26TH Day of March 2024.
