P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is a private, non-profit organization
comprised of more than 300,000 predominantly Black college-educated women
whose primary purpose is to provide support through established programs in
local communities throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University in Washington,
D.C., the sorority currently has more than 1,000 alumnae/collegiate chapters
located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands,
Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and
WHEREAS, the Collier County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.,
chartered October 26, 2013, by 25 members of this esteemed sisterhood as
the first African American chartered sorority in Collier County, is committed
to the development of programs based upon the organization’s Five-Point
Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development,
International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and
Political Awareness and Involvement, as established by its founders more than
110 years ago; and
WHEREAS, celebrating its tenth year, the Collier County Alumnae Chapter has exemplified
the spirit of its founders in their respective roles as educators, business
leaders, medical professionals, community and student advocates, and activists,
both professionally and voluntarily, and through their efforts to improve the
quality of life and overall well-being of citizens in Collier County, Florida; and
WHEREAS, the Collier County Alumnae Chapter’s mission and programs benefit our
community through initiatives such as mentorship programs for underserved
youth, scholarship and awards programs, charitable giving at home and abroad,
health and wellness seminars, educational/political forums, and voter
registration campaigns;
NOW THEREFORE, the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, wishes to
congratulate members of the Collier County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc., on its ten years of outstanding service to Collier County,
Florida, and that October 26, 2023, be designated as
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY DAY IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 24TH Day of October 2023.
