PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Sky (including both its meteorological and astronomical perspectives)
surrounds our planet and an appreciation and understanding of what lies above is
important for our individual and societal well-being, and
WHEREAS, for centuries men and women have marveled at the beauty of the sky and
documented this through paintings and photographs, and
WHEREAS, mariners, farmers, and others in the out-of-doors have used a knowledge of
the sky and its cloud and optical phenomena to enhance their livelihoods and
safety, and
WHEREAS, a knowledge of the sky and cloud formations is an integral part of our nation's
and our local area weather warning program, and
WHEREAS, Collier County has a unique geographical location that allows its residents and
visitors to view incredible skyscapes including, but not limited to, almost daily
warm-season thunderstorms, cooler-season clouds of all types, rainbows,
colorful sunrises, and sunsets, and more, and
WHEREAS, fostering a knowledge of the sky, including clouds, optical phenomena, planetary
motions, orbiting objects such as the International Space Station, and the lunar
cycle, helps all understand many aspects of physical and environmental science
that may not have been taught throughout in their schooling, and are relevant to
our lives today and for the future, and
WHEREAS, our sky is the only sky that we have and should be enjoyed, cherished, and
protected, and our local Sky Awareness Week would be celebrated with National
Sky Awareness Week, a celebration that has existed since the late 1980's;
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that April 24 - 30, 2022 be designated as
SKY AWARENESS WEEK IN COLLIER COUNTY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 26th Day of April 2022.
