OBJECTIVE: Consideration of Board support of the colocation and of a proposed Saint Padre Pio College of Osteopathic Medicine on the campus of Ave Maria University. CONSIDERATIONS: Catholic Healthcare International (CHI) is proposing the colocation of the Saint Padre Pio School for the Relief of Suffering, College of Osteopathic Medicine, at Ave Maria University. This college will be the first of its kind in the United States, incorporating the teachings and tenets of the Catholic Church as they relate to medicine and bioethics in the formal medical school curriculum. The school of osteopathic medicine will be an independent, non-profit, separately financed, licensed, accredited, and governed entity. Joint degree programs in bioethics and theology will be developed, and students at Ave Maria University and other universities on the Newman List will have preferential consideration for admission. In its early phases of planning, CHI estimates that the new school will create over 100 new jobs at an average salary of $100,000 per year, have a direct economic impact of $80 million per year, and an indirect economic impact of $40 million per year. A new 100,000 square foot building is proposed along with student housing. CHI projects that the construction phase will create 350 jobs and have a $100 million economic impact. The school will have a total of 150 students per year in the four-year program. Other programs, such as dentistry, physician assistant, nurse anesthesia, and physical therapy may be added to the school in the future. CHI anticipates the first class to be admitted in the fall of 2025. FISCAL IMPACT: None. GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: This action will result in no growth management impact. LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, raises no legal issues at this time and requires majority vote for Board approval. -JAK RECOMMENDATION: That the Board consider supporting the colocation of a proposed Saint Padre Pio College of Osteopathic Medicine on the campus of Ave Maria University.
