Agenda 01/25/2022 Item #16E1 (Donation fo 13 Sensory Kits form Additionals Needs, Inc.)01/25/2022
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to accept the donation of 13 sensory kits from Additional Needs, Inc. to the
Emergency Medical Services Division for the purpose to help calm special needs patients being
transported by ambulance or in emergency situations handled by staff.
OBJECTIVE: To approve and accept the donation of 13 sensory kits from Additional Needs, Inc.
Acceptance of this donation will help decrease anxiety and stress for patients on the autism
spectrum by blocking out noise and keeping their hands busy. Patients can become
overwhelmed by the flashing lights, loud noises, and attention on emergency scenes and the
items within the sensory kits can calm and reassure the patients allowing an assessment to take
place. Each ambulance and quick response vehicle will be supplied with a sensory kit. The
sensory kit will be deployed when a patient needs comfort and reassurance to provide a safe
transport. The items will also facilitate a calm transfer to emergency department personnel.
CONSIDERATIONS: The Collier County Emergency Medical Services Division was offered 13
sensory kits free of charge by Additional Needs, Inc on behalf of the autism community. The sensory
kits were purchased by Additional Needs, Inc. at a cost of $741 for 13 sensory kits for the Collier County
Emergency Medical Services Division. The sensory kits will assist Emergency Medical Services
personnel to provide quality care to the citizens and visitors of the community.
FISCAL IMPACT: No fiscal impact.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management impacts associated with
this Executive Summary.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, is approved as to
form and legality and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
