The Collier County Board of Commissioners
Government Building
Tamiani Trail East
Naples, Florida 34112
Attention: Board of Commissioners
This letter is to address the board on the matter of the designation of the fire stations.
The location of the fire stations is an issue of some contention. Most people want the fire
stations and EMS located near some one's home other than theirs. They are afraid ofthe
esthetics of the building, the noise, and in general, the disturbance of the engines.
I am a resident of Winterpark 8. My location is just behind Station 20, and the
administration office of the East Naples Fire District. The question should be; how good
a neighbor is the fire department to our community? The answer is easy. They are an
asset of our community. The building is pleasant to look at and blends with the
neighborhood. When we painted our buildings we choose a color that blended and
complimented the color chosen by the fire department. They keep the area around their
building immaculate. They are neat and always considerate of our community. It is also
their community. The different services have meetings and training on a regular schedule
and do NOT ever disturb us or inconvenience us in any way. The men and women are
polite and considerate. The drivers are always aware of the residents; the older folk and
the children and our pets They use their sirens only when traffic does not yield to them.
For us, they are quiet. They are an important part or our community. They know who
we are and are there for our special needs. In our community we chose to become
friends. Friends take care of friends and watch over us with out being in our business.
Our privacy is never invaded.
Think about how much time it takes to get to anyone of you. If you are having a heart attack or
stroke every minute is important. Those first few minutes can make the difference between life
and death. Your life! Or your death! How fast they can get to you and how much traffic they
must travel through matters. Your home is on fire, are you counting the seconds? I believe that
you are counting and praying until they arrive. How far away they are to you matters only if you
are the person in need. Remember, you are counting every second until thrve.
They are not a commercial or industrial, or a retail business. They are an essential
service! Every person in this room will need their services at one or more times in your
life. How far away and how long a wait do you want? How important is your family to
you? Can you safely say that having a fire station in some one's neighborhood other than
your neighborhood is better for you? You will most likely answer Yes, unless it is your
life that matters.
I chose to move near a fire and rescue station. I know from first hand experience that
their proximate closeness was essential. They helped whether the problem was small or
the emergency was life threatening. Because my husband was desperately ill it was the
~/ tt:(2
f~/11 ~
best decision I could have made. I needed them more times than I care to count. No
matter how many times I called them they responded. Because we were so close to the
station my husband had a response time that saved him anxiety and stress. I will be
forever grateful that they were close and watched over us.
We are the neighbors of Fire Station 20 and concur with the above letter and want you to
hear our voice in this matter.
Yours truly,
!c~ .
Rosalie Rhodes
~ H).fo8 ?(ieb~tcJ ~
Our signatures show that we agree that the fire department is an essential service and
very much needed.
