A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA TO SUPPORT MEMBERSHIP INTO THE
WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) AND THE ASSOCIATION
OF AMERICAN RETIRED PERSONS (AARP) NETWORK OF AGE
FRIENDLY CITIES AND COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE AND WILL
WORI{ WITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO HELP ENSURE
EVERYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO LIVE A LONG, HEALTHY AND
FULL LIFE.
WHEREAS, the global population of people aged sixty (60) and over is expected to more
than triple from 605 million in 2000 to almost two (2) billion by 2050; and
WHEREAS, in the United States of America, the population of people aged sixty-five (65)
and over is expected to grow fi•om thirty-five (35) million in 2000 to 88.5 million by 2050, taking
the total share of the 65+ population from twelve percent (12%) to twenty percent (20%) of the
total population; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has the highest percentage of older adults of any state in
the nation, with Collier County having over 130,746 older adults sixty (60) and over, representing
36% of our population; and
WHEREAS, with the population of older adults in Collier County projected to continue
increasing, our community should actively and continuously engage older adults in planning
processes to assess barriers and determine priorities to build a community that is livable for all
ages and abilities; and
WHEREAS, research shows that older Americans overwhelmingly want to stay in their
homes and communities as they age; and
WHEREAS, the County believes that the older adult population should have
Opportunities, options and environments to stay active, engaged and healthy with dignity and
enjoyment; and
WHEREAS, aging is a life-long process whereby an age -friendly community is not just
"elder -friendly" but also intended to be fi•iendly for all ages; and
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a Global Network of
Age Friendly Cities and Communities to encourage and promote public policies to increase the
number of cities and communities that support healthy aging and thereby improve the health, well-
being, satisfaction and quality of life for older Americans; and

WHEREAS, on April 23, 2019, Florida was designated an Age -Friendly State, the largest
state in the nation to join the Network; and
WHEREAS, Collier County and the Leadership Coalition an Aging all share a vision to
improve the life of all citizens and collectively build a stronger community for all ages to live,
learn, work and play
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF COLLIER COUNTY, Florida, that:
Our community, Collier County, will support membership into the World Health
Organization (WHO) and AARP's Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities Initiative
and will work with community partners to help ensure everyone has the ability to live a long,
healthy and full life.
