Agenda 01/14/2020 Item #3D1 (Employee of the Year)01/14/2020
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to recognize Jolen Mayberry, Public Services Department, Park Ranger, as the
2019 Employee of the Year.
OBJECTIVE: The Employee of the Year is selected by the Employee of the Month Committee from all
of the Employee of the Month winners in the year, to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of an
employee who has made significant contributions to the organization or to our community.
CONSIDERATIONS: Since 2003 Jolen has worked with the Parks and Recreation Division as a Park
Ranger covering the Immokalee area. She patrols the park areas for compliance with county ordinances,
rules and policies. She helps maintain the parks, by keeping the areas clean, safe, and litter free. She also
works to protect and maintain the wildlife and natural resources. She works very closely with the Parks
staff in Immokalee to address issues they see, such as graffiti, vandalism, etc.
Jolen has served the community well by participating in a host of events. She is a prominent fixture at
these events such as the “School Backpack Giveaway” and “Christmas Around the World” and helps
wherever she sees the need.
Additionally, Jolen assists Conservation Collier at Pepper Ranch with the annual Sunflower Festival by
presenting a program she developed on the Florida Black Bear. It is an extremely interactive program for
the kids and is enormously popular. She also has a fishing program in place where she takes children to
Lake Trafford to fish during school half-days. In the summer she enlists the assistance of the kids through
a “Do the Right Thing” program she instituted, to clean up litter in the parks in exchange for passes to the
pool. Jolen has fostered great working relationships with our many partners in Immokalee (the Sheriff’s
Office, FWC and CRA), as well as private organizations to assist folks with issues whom she runs across
in the course of her daily routine.
This year Jolen went above and beyond to assist members of her community two times in one week. In
the first instance, while on patrol, she came upon a woman and her children at the park who appeared to
be living in their truck. She talked with the woman and convinced her to follow her to the Friendship
House to get some assistance, but first took them to a gas station and filled the lady’s truck with a full
tank of gas! Two days later, Jolen met an older gentleman and his grandkids at the park. The kids said
they were hungry, but the man said he did not have money to buy them food. Jolen then drove to
McDonalds and brought them all lunch! Her selflessness, empathy and desire to help the citizens in her
community are truly inspiring.
Jolen continues to pursue excellence in her field by taking courses toward her Master Naturalist
certification; a never-ending quest to hone her expertise. This is more than a job for Jolen, this is her
passion. She truly cares for each person that comes through “her” parks. Jolen’s desire and drive to serve
the community is what makes her so deserving of the Employee of the Year recognition.
FISCAL IMPACT: The selected “Employee of the Year” receives a $250.00 cash award. Funds for this
are available in the Human Resources budget for this program.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management Impacts associated with
this Executive Summary.
