Agenda 11/12/2019 Item #16D 8 (Budget Amendment for Office and Lobby Improvements at the Collier Museum)11/12/2019
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve a Budget Amendment in the amount of $68,981.24 to fund lobby and
office improvements at Collier Museum at Government Center.
OBJECTIVE: To maintain attractive and functional museum facilities for public enjoyment and
education.
CONSIDERATIONS: In preparation for the temporary loan of the Key Marco artifacts from the
Smithsonian Institution and the University of Pennsylvania, staff completed a major capital project at the
Marco Island Historical Museum that included the installation of a 130-kw back-up generator to maintain
temperature and relative humidity in the case of a power outage in the museum. The project was
estimated to cost $359,000, and in July 2018 the Board of County Commissioners (Board) approved a
Budget Amendment to fully fund the estimated cost, with the source of funds being other capital projects
within the Museum Capital Fund (314).
The total project cost for the generator project and other miscellaneous improvements needed in advance
of the artifacts arriving was significantly less than originally estimated. Now that the generator project is
complete, other projects that were deferred to assure its full funding can move forward. Improvements are
needed in the lobby and former gift shop area of the Collier Museum at Government Center. These areas
have not been refreshed since 2008. Staff has secured proposals from the exhibit design firms on contract
to create a more attractive and welcoming space in the lobby that will include updated light ing, a new
greeter desk, a brochure and information display area, benches for visitor comfort, and new interpretive
elements. The former gift shop is now used as office space and will be renovated with more functional
seating, work surfaces, and storage. The total cost of the lobby and office improvements project is
estimated at $67,900.
FISCAL IMPACT: Staff has prepared a Budget Amendment moving $68,981.24 (project estimate plus a
small contingency) from the Marco Museum Repair project (Project No. 50517) to the Main Museum
General Repair project (Project No. 50510). The source of funding for all the projects in the Museum
Capital Fund (314) is the Tourist Development Tax and a transfer from the General Fund.
LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS: This Item has been reviewed by the County Attorney, raises no legal
issues, and requires majority vote for approval. -JAK
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no Growth Management impact.
RECOMMENDATION: To authorize a Budget Amendment in the amount of $68,981.24 to fund lobby
and office improvements at Collier Museum at Government Center.
