Campylobacter
•118 people knowingly infected by the disease across 18
states; 26 people were hospitalized; 21 reported cases
of people infected in Florida
•CDC said outbreak was so serious because the
Campylobacter bacteria involved were resistant to
commonly recommended, first-line antibiotics.
•95% of pet store puppies studied received one or more
antibiotic courses before arriving or while at the store;
1% of puppies who received antibiotics were given
them for treatment only. The rest were given
preventatively.
•Petland was at the center of the antibiotic-resistant
Campylobacter outbreak.
•87% of people infected reported they had contact
with a puppy from Petland stores or had contact
with a person who became sick after contact with a
puppy from a Petland store.
•25 of the ill people were Petland employees.

•Katie worked at Petland in December 2017 as a
puppy counselor. She sold puppies to customers and
was responsible for cleaning kennels.
•Her mother purchased a puppy from Petland that
same month and unknown to her mother, the puppy
had Campylobacter.
•Katie in Jan. 2018 fell ill with a fever of 103
degrees, which later increased to 104.7 degrees.
Katie was rushed to urgent care. She spent four days
at the hospital and was diagnosed with
Campylobacter.
