Agenda 10/22/2019 Item #3D (Employee of the Month)10/22/2019
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to recognize Sheri Calhoun, Administrative Services Department Training
Coordinator, as the September 2019 Employee of the Month.
OBJECTIVE: To recognize the efforts and accomplishments of an employee who has made significant
contributions to the organization and to our community.
CONSIDERATIONS: Sheri has been working in Human Resources since 2017. Her passion for
teaching and facilitation of learning is obvious to anyone who attends any of her instructor-led training
events. She thoughtfully develops curriculum that includes detailed learning objectives and outcomes,
with the needs of County team members in mind.
Sheri is responsible for overseeing the County's high school summer internship program, which just
concluded its fourth year. The internship program has been a tremendous success for the County and
continues to grow and flourish with each year; from its start in 2016 with six students, to having nineteen
students in 2019. A successful program like this requires a great deal of administrative oversight and
behind the scenes coordination. Hosting an intern requires thoughtful preparation in the creation of
meaningful projects for the interns to complete during their internship, as well as commitment of County
employees to dedicate their time training and working with the interns. Sheri works closely with our
Division employees to ensure that we have enough placements for the students and that our hosts are
prepared for their interns.
Sheri partners with the community; Collier County Public Schools, Lorenzo Walker Technical School,
NAACP Collier County, and the Naples Chamber of Commerce to publicize and promote the County's
internship program to the students; attending meetings and coaching events that help increase the
student's awareness of the internship program when considering their summer opportunities.
The interns attend the County's 2-day New Employee Orientation, which Sheri facilitates. She presents a
specific afternoon curriculum just for the student interns, educating them on what is expected of them
when working in a professional setting. Frequently, this is the first job experience for many of the
students and they are often nervous and uncertain about what to expect. She provides an overview of
basic customer service, including how to answer the phone, how to respond to emails, proper
introductions and shaking hands, work appropriate apparel, teamwork and how to appropriately interact
with coworkers spanning many different generations.
Sheri truly goes above and beyond to ensure that the students have a positive work and learning
experience; and that the Divisions see the value of hosting an intern and how it positively impacts the
lives of the students and our organization. This is one of many reasons Sheri is very deserving of this
award.
FISCAL IMPACT: The selected “Employee of the Month” receives a $150.00 cash award. Funds for
this are available in the employee’s budget cost center.
GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There are no Growth Management Impacts associated with
this Executive Summary.
