WHEREAS, a lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates of obesity,
diabetes, and other health problems among residents of Collier County and being
able to walk or bicycle to work, school, or stores offers an opportunity to build
activity into daily routine; and,
WHEREAS, only about one-quarter of Americans get; the recommended amount of exercise
and this lack of inactivity has contributed to the obesity epidemic and i$ a
factor in more than 200,000 deaths a year,' and,
WHEREAS, driving private vehicles contributes to traffic congestion and air pollution: and,
WHEREAS, due to an inadequate supply of quality affordable housing located near job
centers, low-income citizens are frequently faced with living in increasingly
remote locations with longer commutes and higher transportation costs,' and,
WHEREAS, by directing growth to communities where people already live and work, smart
growth limits the amount of farmland and open space that is developed, makes
existing communities more attractive with a mix of housing, restaurants, parks,
cafes, and jobs, and minimizes the need for new water, sewer, and road
infrastructure that increases taxpayer burdens,' and
WHEREAS, Collier County will be the first county in the state to participate in ''Smart
Growth Awareness Month':' and,
WH~RI:AS, the Collier County Healthy Promotion Coalition and the Community Traffic Safety
Team hove volunteered time and effort to support ''Smart Growth Awareness
Month-'
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that November, 2008, be designated as
Smart Growth Awareness Month
and encourages everyone to consider the safety and health of the community
today and every day.
