A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING STATE FUNDING FOR
SCHOOL NURSES IN ALL FLORIDA PUBLIC SCHOOLS
WHEREAS, according to a recent news article, there are approximately 24 licensed nurses
for 36 schools and over 35,000 students in Collier County; and
WHEREAS. school attendance is improved by the school nurse's early detection and
referral due to disease, and by adequate assessment and judgment when students are well enough
to remain in school; and
WHEREAS. school nurses collaborate with administration to promote a healthy, safe and
nurturing environment; and
WHEREAS, according to a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Nurses,
98 percent of nurses have saved a child's life, 82 percent have identified an abused child. and 67
percent have counseled a depressed/suicidal student; and
WHEREAS, teachers are freed up to devote their time to educating students when school
nurses coordinate the health care needs of the students.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL YED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board hereby respectfully
requests that the Florida Legislature and Governor Jeb Bush provide new funding to Florida's
sixty-seven public school districts for school nurses.
This Resolution adopted after motion, second and majority vote.
