PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, according to the 2008 Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey, nearly 70
percent of Collier County middle and high school students choose not to drink:
and,
WHEREAS, students who choose not to drink are more likely to attend school regularly,
perform better academically and become more productive community members:
and,
WHEREAS, underage drinking is a preventable at-risk behavior for Collier County's youth:
and,
WHEREAS, a community response to underage drinking will empower our teens to continue
making the right decisions when it comes to alcohol and other drugs: and,
WHEREAS, by working together as a community, Collier County can further reduce teen
alcohol use and risky behaviors: and,
WHEREAS, parents are the first line of defense against underage drinking: and,
WHEREAS, to acknowledge that April is Alcohol Awareness Month, Drug Free Collier and
its partners are dedicated to encouraging Collier County porents to start and
to keep talking with their teens about underage drinking and its consequences.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that each and every Collier County porent and adult be called
upon to
"SE THE WAU"
between their teen and alcohol: to be clear, be firm, and be consistent when
talking about alcohol.
