WHEREAS, traffic accidents cause about 40,000 fatalities nationwide each year, and highway
crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 2 to 34: and,
WHEREAS, in 2008, 34 individuals died in traffic crashes in Collier County: and,
WHEREAS, more than half of passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes during
2008 were unrestrained and:
WHEREAS, alcohol-related crashes account for 15% percent of all traffic fatalities within
Collier County and speeding was a contributing factor in 6% of all fatal crashes:
and,
WHEREAS, deaths and injuries on U.S. highways cost society over $150 billion annually: and,
WHEREAS, safer driving behaviors such as the use of seat belts, not drinking and driving,
restricting the use of cell phones, not texting while driving, and obeying traffic
laws are encouraged: and,
WHEREAS, increased investment in f'()Qdand bridge improvements would dramatically reduce
the number of traffic-f'tIlated injuries and deaths: tlIId,
WHEREAS, Collier County has ctJmmitted to spending approximately $600 million on road
improvements ill the TransptJrtation Five Year Work PrtJgN1m that will improve
the county's rDadway safety and traffic circulation.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of CtJllier County,
Florida, that October 10, 2009, be designated as
Put The Brakes On Fatalities Day@
and call upon everyone to help save lives by spreading these important messages
throughout our communities.
