EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Recommendation to approve a Resolution renaming the Chokoloskee Bridge to the “John Joseph
Brown Memorial Bridge.”
OBJECTIVE: To rename the Chokoloskee Bridge the “John Joseph Brown Memorial Bridge.”
CONSIDERATIONS: John Joseph Brown was an early pioneer in Chokoloskee, Everglades, Collier
County and South Florida. Mr. Brown moved to South Florida in 1859. He served in the Florida
Legislature in 1876, in the Florida House of Representatives for Dade County. Along with his son
William, Mr. Brown served in the 1st East Florida Calvary, a Calvary from Florida that served in the
Union Army between October 29, 1863, and November 17, 1865, during the American Civil War. Mr.
Brown passed away in Everglades, FL in 1892, and he and many of his family members are buried at the
mouth of the Barron River in the Brown Cemetery at the “Old Brown Homestead” in Everglades City,
Florida.
The Chokoloskee Bridge was recently replaced with construction completed in December 2018. The
Chokoloskee Bridge remains the only bridge in and out of Chokoloskee Island.
In January 2019, a petition to request to name a County facility, supporting the renaming of the
Chokoloskee Bridge to the “John Joseph Brown Memorial Bridge,” was delivered to the County
Manager’s Office with over 200 signatures. On April 16, 2019, the City Council of the City of Everglades
passed a Resolution declaring support for the renaming of the Chokoloskee Bridge to the “John Joseph
Brown Memorial Bridge.”

for Collier County-owned buildings, structures, or other County-owned facilities. Under this policy, a
county-owned structure can be named to honor a natural person if their local actions specifically and
directly benefited Collier County, and preferably, the specific facility, or geographic area where the

toward any such plaque, memorial, or notation.”
