WHEREAS, traditionally. Thanksgiving day is a celebration for the harvest and an expression of
thanks generally, 1;1 Florida, we also take the opportunity to recognize our farmers
who grow over 280 different food commodities that overflow our tables on this day
of family, friends and outreach; and,
WHEREAS, across the USA, the week leading up to and including Thanksgiving has since 1955,
been known as Farm City Week, this year falling on November 2dh through November
26th; and,
WHEREAS, this year is the 5-f1' year of the National Farm City Week and will be celebrated in
Collier County with the annual Farm-City Barbecue on Wednesday, November 25th at
Ave Maria University, presented by the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce and
local business and agricultural leaders: and,
WHEREAS, with agriculture as a cornerstone of our nations security and way of life, American
farmers and ranchers provide the safest, most abundant and most affordable food
supply in the world, and we should remember the 24 million American workers, about
17% of the total US workforce, who are involved; and,
WHEREAS, agriculture Is an important element in Collier Countys economic machine, with total
activity of over $300 million generated annually, by having twenty-two percent of
Collier County being utilized for agrlcult'..tre; and,
WHEREAS, through agriculture we have the same environmental benefits as natural vegetation
providing vital ecological resources, including habitat for wildlife, and recharge areas
for aqUIfer: and,
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners supports local agriculture through programs in
cooperation with the University of Florida/IFAS Extension Services and others and
also encourages all citizens 1'0 pause and recognize the tremendous contributions made
to our way of living by local farmers and ranchers impacting both our economy and
food supply in cur beautiful county; and,
NOW THEREFORE- be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that on behalf of the citizens of Co/lier County, great appreciation and honor
is owed to all of this county's agriculturalists, and that November 2C1h through 26th
be designated as
Farm-City Week
