Item Summary:
Proclamation recognizing June 20. 2009 as World Refugee Day. As we see exponential
growth in the number of refugees and displaced people around the world with over eighty
percent being women and children their tenacity and strength is honored with this day of
recognition of their plight and we welcome the many who have been assimulated into our
society. To be accepted by Sharon Kirkpatrick and Bob Saunders, District 3 Director. Catholic
Chanties of Collier County.

PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS. there are ",ore than 36 mil/ion refugees and displaced people around the world,
and the nu~1ber of refugees ami displaced people worldwide has doubled during
the last decade: and,
WHEREAS, according tc' the V.S. l>eptJrtment of State, it is estimated that more than 80%
of refugees and displaced people are women and ch/'ldren: and,
WHEREAS, June 20, 2'009 marks: the ninth annual recognition and celebration of World
Refugee /)or: and,
WHEREAS, the /.Jnited States has long been both a symbol of hope and a source of
substantial 12id for refugees aroumi the world and, in partnership with private
voluntary organizations and government agencies, the American people have
provided generous humanitarian assistance, to millions of persons dislocated by
natural disa~;ter, war, or by civl'l strife: antf,
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has successfully resettled thousands of refugees over the
years and many have become V.S. Citizens and influential members of our
society: and"
WHEREAS, the State of Florida and its municipalities remain firmly committed to a proud
tradition of' asSisting ami welcoming refugees and displaced people to our
communities; and,
WHEREAS, we salute the incredibl. tenacity and strength of the refugees and displaced
people who have overcome incredible odds and hardships. W. thank 01/ the
voluntary a[,rencies, our local and state governments and all the dedicated
providers who work tirelessly to help refugees integrate into our society, laws
and culture: and,
WHEREAS, we salute and welcome the refugees and displaced peoples spirit to strive for a
better and " peaceful life, and June 20, 2009 we recI1gnize the plight of the
mil/ions of /refugees who have been forced to flee their homelands, seeking
freedom and safety from persecution.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that June 20, 2009, be designated as
WORLD REFUGEE DAY
