the first Earth Day celebration was held on April 22, 1970, marking the
beginning of the modern environmental movement: and.
local communities can do much to reverse environmental degradation and
contribute to bUilding a healthy society and a sustainable environment by
addressing issues such as energy use, transportation, and waste
prevention: llnct
the environmental realities of our time require humans to make a
dramatlc shift in our relationship to the earth,' and,
the citizens of Collier County have the opportunity to join mil/ions of
people around the world in making a positive difference in reducing water
and air pollution. conserving resources, and saving energy by recycling
and buying recycled products: and.
the Public Utilities Divisions Solid Waste Management and Utility Billing
& Customer Service Departments, under the direction of the Collier
County Board of County Commissioners, have worked diligently to develop
a multifaceted recycling program as a way to preserve valuable landftYl
space and conserve natural resources/ and..
the Public Utilities Division s Pollution Control & Preventian Department
strives to protect the safety, health, and welfare of the community and
its environment through the protection of Collier County's groundwater~
freshwater, surface water, and other water resources from al! sources
of pollutian.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Cammissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that April 22, 2009 be designated as
Earth Day in Collier County
and urge everyone to join the m1'llions of people across the globe in
maximizing awareness and celebration of this day.
