EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
COMMISSIONER REQUEST FOR BOARD APPROVAL FOR PAYMENT TO
ATTEND FUNCTION SERVING A VALID PUBLIC PURPOSE
OBJECTIVE: For the Board of County Commissioners to declare a valid public
purpose for a Commissioncr to attend function/event and approve payment by the Clcrk.
CONSIDERATIONS: Pursuant to Resolution No. 99-410, the Board of County
Commissioners has dcternlined that attendance at the functions of fraternal, business,
environmental, educational, charitable, social, professional, trade, homeowners, ethnic,
and civic association/organizations serves a valid public purpose, provided that said
functions reasonably relate to Collier County matters.
COMMISSIONER: Donna Fiala
FUNCTION/EVENT: Fifth Annual Honor the Free Press Day
PUBLIC PURPOSE: Meet and interact with local business and community leaders.
DATE OF FUNCTION/EVENT: March l8 ,2009
FISCAL IMPACT: $30.00 Funds to be paid from Commissioner's travel budget.
RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of County Commissioners, in accordance with
Resolution No. 99~410, approve payment by the Clerk for Commissioner Donna Fiala to
attend function serving a valid public purpose.

This year's honoree is William C, ( Bill) Gallo, Sports writer and Cartoonist tor the New York Daily News.
Born in Manhattan on December 28, 1922, joined the United States Marine Corps
in 1941, a member of the 4th. Division saw Combat in Roi Nmur. Siapan. Tinan and Iwo Jima
Mr. Gallo's fame as a sports Cartoonist and Columnist for the New York Daily News is known far and wide. He is the
recipient of the coveted "Reuben" award by the National Cartoonist Society and is a sixteen time winner of the "Page One"
Journalist award from the New York Newspaper Guild. His fame and authority in boxing was honored by his colleagues
from the downtown Athletic Club with the "James J Walker" Award.
His more than 5,000 cartoons and his innumerable sports columns have brought honor and prestige to his profession.
Bill lives with his wife Dolores in Yonkers. They have two sons, Gregory, who is the sports editor of the New York Post, and
Bill Jr., who is the Steeplechase Racing Secretary at the Belmont Race Track.
