P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, waste plastics have entered into all marine habitats and every level of
the ocean food chain, with approximately 80 percent of marine debris
coming from land-based sources; and,
WHEREAS, to raise awareness of this critical issue, Naples Zoo is hosting a
visiting art exhibition “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea,” a
collection of 11 colorful and dramatic sculptures of marine animals
made entirely of plastic debris collected from beaches, representing
the more than 315 billion pounds of plastic in oceans today and
underscoring the need for wildlife conservation; and,
WHEREAS, “Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea” aligns perfectly with the
Naples Zoo’s mission to inspire people of all ages to respect, value, and
help conserve wildlife and the natural world; and,
WHEREAS, Naples Zoo and its Skip the Straw initiative, in partnership with the
Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, Marco Island Area
Chamber of Commerce, Marco Island Civic Association and the
Concierge and Guest Services Association of Southwest Florida are
reaching out to hospitality industry-based businesses to ask them to
make the Skip the Straw pledge to further reduce land-based sources
of marine debris; and,
WHEREAS, Naples Zoo has trained 28 volunteers and more than 70 staff members
on Washed Ashore and the impacts of plastic pollution on the world’s
oceans and zoo staff and volunteers are educating guests and asking
them to make small efforts in conservation for our waters and our
wildlife.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that the Board recognizes Naples Zoo for its
contributions and concerns regarding the issue of marine debris and its
effect on our community.
