PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, traffic crashes in Collier County have claimed 28 lives to date in
2010, 39 lives in 2009, and 34 lives in 2008, per Florida
Department of Motor Vehicle Statistics; and,
WHEREAS, Florida's yearly traffic death toll was 2,563 in 2009 and 2,983
in 2008, per Florida Department of motor Vehicles statistics;
and,
WHEREAS, young drivers, ages 15 - to 20 - years old are especially
vulnerable to death and injury on our roadways, with traffic
crashes cited as the leading cause of death for teenagers in
America. Mile for mile, teenagers are involved in three times as
many fatal crashes as all other drivers. Inexperience,
immaturity, speed, drinking, not wearing seat belts, distractions
(e.g cell phone use, loud music, other teen passengers, etc.)
drowsy driving, night, driving, and other drug use aggravate
this problem; and,
WHEREAS, safer driving behaviors such as buckling up, driving sober,
obeying traffic signs and laws, focusing completely on navigating
your vehicle and responding to conditions and other roadway
users, being courteous, and driving defensively would dramatically
reduce the number of traffic- related crushes, injuries and
deaths; and,
WHEREAS, the National date of October 10, 2010 is the Tenth Annual Put
The Brakes on Fatalaties Day® and themed Don't be Driven to
Distraction - Drive to Arrive. The State of Florida is proud to
participate in this nationwide effort to save lives and our
roadways.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of
Collier County, Florida, that October 10, 2010 be designated as
10th ANNUAL PUT THE BRAKES ON FA TAL.ITIES DAY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 28th Day of September, 2010.
