Collier County has an interest in providing the final resting place for the retired guided - missile frigate USS George
Philip. We are in the process of identifying funding and completing the Army Corps of Engineers permitting process
to request deployment of the George Philip to serve as an artificial reef off the coast of the County.
As an artificial reef, the ship will contribute to stable, long -tenn habitat fur scores of marine fish species in the Gulf
of Mexico. This project will divert fishing and diving pressure away from natural reefs, provide increased tourism
expenditures in Collier County, and present an opportunity to preserve the legacy of the many sons and daughters of
Collier County who have given their lives in the pursuit of freedom for all.
Commissioned in 1978 and decommissioned on March 15, 2003, the 445 -foot George Philip is in reserve at the
Naaal Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, WA and the U.S- Navy has initiated the process of
scrapping the vessel.
We are concemed that the Navy will scrap this vessel before we have the opportunity to formalize plans and
complete funding and permitting to move it to Collier County. We ask that you please contact the U.S. Department
of the Navy and request that they place the George Philip on Donation Hold Status for Collier County and forego
plans to scrap the vessel.
