PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, wildfires can cause major environmental, social and economic damages. The loss of timber,
wildlife habitat, homes and ~!Vel1lives may result from a devastating wildfire. The wildfire
that does not start is the one that does not have to be fought/ and,
WHEREAS, of the three sides of the fire behavior triangle (fuels, weather and topographyJ weather
is the most variable and least predictable. Changes in weather can lead to unexpected fire
behavior and result in danger to life and property, whether the fire is the result of a
carefully planned prescribed fire or a wildfire. Knowledge of current and forecast weather
is critical for all fire managers and firefighters,' and,
WHEREAS, prevention is the key in helping to reduce the number of human caused fires- one of the
most important goals for the Division of Forestry. Even though Florida is the lightning
capital of the world, arson and escaped debris burning are still the two main causes of
wildfires in Florida/ and.
WHEREAS, public safety agencies, the Division of Forestry, and members of the community want to
ensure that residents and visitors take responsibility to minimize the outbreak and spread
of wildfire,' and,
WHEREAS, The recent Wildfire Workshop was a success due to the contributions of the Division of
Forestry, Golden Gote Fire District, with special thanks to Jenelle Shriner, Kyle Jordan,
and Renee Stoll from WINK news/ tIIK/.
WHEREAS, the public is requested to assist emergency responders by working to ensure a defensible
zone of 30' around their primary residence is clear of brush and debris so as to minimize
the spread of fire to homes and businesses,' and,
WHEREAS, the public should help emergency vehicles proceed safely to the scene by yielding for their
safe possage/ and,
WHEREAS, residents should ensure that their house numbers are clearly visible and access can be
made by emergency equipment to help protect their homes/ and.
WHEREAS, residents should be pre pored for emergency situations including evacuations, if conditions
become severe/ and.
WHEREAS, residents should monitor local television, radio, and their NOAA Weather Alert radio for
emergency information during times of active wildfire events.
NOW THEREFORE. be it proclaimed by the Boord of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that March 10, 2010, be designated as
A Day of Heightened Awareness of Wildfire Danger in Collier County
