PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Collier County, with its unique weather and water resources, offers special
water - related recreational activities to its residents, and visitors from
around the world, and,
WHEREAS, Collier County's miles of saltwater tidal coast line, acres of inland lakes and
miles of rivers and streams provide many of the needed environments for
recreation and relaxation, and,
WHEREAS, recreational boating is one of Florida's leading outdoor activities, with many
residents and visitors participating in the pastime distinguishing Florida as
one of the "Boating Capitals of the World", and,
WHEREAS, every year lives are lost in boating accidents in spite of the educational
efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the
U. S. Power Squadrons, and the Florida Marine Patrol, and other local
agencies; and,
WHEREAS, Federal, State, and local agencies, private companies and groups have
combined their efforts to reduce boating accidents by developing and
executing safety training programs such as 'Boat Smart - Boat Safe",, and,
WHEREAS, the sponsors of these safety programs have focused their efforts toward
the youth and genera / public of Collier County, uiging them to enhance
boating pleasure by avoiding possible loss of life, while reducing the loss of
property; and,
WHEREAS, Collier County urges all citizens and visitors to join in /earning and
practicing safe boating by wearing life jackets, taking boating education
courses, getting vessel safety checks, operating their vessels responsibly,
safely, and sober /y, and obeying Coast Guard Regulations.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that May 22 through May 28, 2010, be designated as
SAFE BOATING WEEK
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 11 th Day of May, 2010.
