Backup Documents 10/25/2011 Item # 4APROCLAMA TION `T A WHEREAS, substance abuse is a public health problem that offects many families; and WHEREAS, ninety percent of Americans who meet the medical criteria for addiction started using alcohol or drugs before the age of 18, seventy -five percent of al/ high school students have used addictive substances and one in five students meets with criteria for addiction, WHEREAS, there are approximately 28, 000 fatal unintentional drug poisonings annually in the United States and drug - related fatalities exceed deaths due to motor vehicle accidents, and WHEREAS, the Narcotics Overdose Prevention d Education (NOPE) Task Force was established in 2004 as a prevention initiative and privvrdes treatment support, education, support for families and advocacy about adolescent substance abuse, and WHEREAS, the NOPE Task Force targets youth by providing graph /c and emotional presentations delivered by /ow enforcement, the jud /c /a/ system, recove-MAg addicts and surviving family members to warn of the dangers of substance abuse, and WHEREAS, the NOPE Task Fome hold a vigil in honor those who have died or are struggling with drug dependence; and WHEREAS, the NOPE Vigil strives to raise awareness and open doors to eliminating the prejudice that has followed the disease of addiction in an effort to encoura he /p; and ge individuals to seek WHEREAS, the Collier County NOPE Vigil will be held on October Z5, Z011 at 7 p.m. at the County Courthouse.
