WHEREAS, on August 14, 1945, the people of the United States received word of the end of World Wor II
and on that day people in the United States and around the world greeted the news of the Allies'
noble victory with joyous celebration, humility, and spiritual reflection; and,
WHEREAS, we pay tribute to all the remarkable citizens who bravely served our country in that time of peril
as they fought fearlessly to defend our freedoms, ensure our continued safety, and promote
liberty and democracy; and,
WHEREAS, while no words are fu //y adequate to express our gratitude or repay the debt we owe them,
Collier County is proud to join in this celebration so aptly named "Keep The Spirit of 45' Alive"
celebrating the men and women who took incredible risks to protect our nation and way of life;
and,
WHEREAS, August 14, 1945, marked not only the end of the war, but also the beginning of an
unprecedented era of rebuilding in which the United States led the effort to restore the
shattered nations of the Allies and their enemies alike and to create institutions to work towards
a more peaceful global community and which helped to strengthen American democracy by
promoting civic engagement, volunteerism, and service to community and country,- and,
WHEREAS, the courage, ded/cat /on, self sacrifice, and compassion of the Wor /d War II generation is a / /ve
today and evident in the United States Armed Forces, including the men and women currently /n
service /n Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world, • and,
WHEREAS, in Collier County to celebrate the ' Sp/rit of 45" two days of events have been organized with the
generosity of local sponsors to take place Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14 giving
everyone the opportrm /ty to join and show gratitude that have been called 'America's Greatest
and Bravest Generation'
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that
August 13 and 14, 2011 be des /goofed as
"SPIRIT OF 45" DAYS M COLLIER COUNTY
