WHEREAS, the history of Marco Island has always been one of discovery. The Calusa Native
Americans inhabited the island some 2000 years ago. In the 15Ws Ponce De Leon the
Spanish explorer discovered and named the island, for the Western world, San Marco
Island, and as one of the jewels in Southwest Florida's Ten Thousand Islands in the late
1870's it saw the beginnings of development to what we now know as Marco Island,- and,
WHEREAS, the beauty of the island has been carefully guarded over the years particularly with the
extensive development that has taken place so we see it has become a place that has
welcomed many who stay to become residents and the many visitors the island entertains;
and,
WHEREAS, the Island has a total area of 17.1 square miles and consists of 10.6 square miles is land
and 6.5 square miles is water. It is truly an island and is reached over two bridges that
give spectacular views as you approach the island and an anticipation of the beautiful
homes, hotels, restaurants and public amenities that are the signature of the island;- and,
WHEREAS, the 2011 Most Beautiful Town in the USA competition has named Marco Island as one of
the six finalists and is currently visiting to evaluate Marco Island and will name a winner in
late July. The pnestge of being named in the top six is a compliment in itself from such a
nationally recognized competition and emphasizes how successful the stewardship of Marco
Island is in protecting the inherent beauty of the island and the surrounding area; and,
WHEREAS, the Collier County Board of County Commissioners is honored to issue this proclamation to
the City of Marco Island in recognition of this accomplishment and in anticipation of the
continued success of this jewel a treasured part of Collier County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that Tune 28, 2011 be designated as
BEAUTIFUL MARCO ISLAND DAY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 28th Day of rune, 2011.
