WHEREAS, the human spirit is indomitable and through adversity a person can grow spiritually to become
an example and benefactor to many less fortunate building a legacy that will have a ripple
effect across the world, this type of person is exemplified in Thomas S. Monaghan, and
WHEREAS, from an early life that offered challenges that could have daunted the strongest spirit Tom
Monaghan took all the blows and developed a tenacious character that eventually brought him
to the success he has enjoyed and to the philanthropic quest he is now pursuing and
WHEREAS, in the last decade Tom Monaghan has provided major funding to rebuild the cathedral in
Managua, Nicaragua, and supported a mission in the Honduran mountain town of San Pedro
Sula, and,
WHEREAS, in 1987, after a meeting with Pope &hn Paul, Tom Monaghan founded Legatus a latin word for
ambassador to encourage Catholic executives to spread the faith in their business and personal
lives, this organization now has representatives throWhout the Americas, and
WHEREAS, in February 2006, ground was broken for a Catholic University and town, both named Ave
Mario at a site 30 miles east of Nap /es, the Ave Maria University has become a great success
with 650 under raciiates from more than 29 countries, the university continues to expand and
at graduation on May 6, 2011 saw the first graduation class that had spent 4 years on
campus, and
WHEREAS, when you have the faith and the philanthropic spirit of Thomas S. Monaghan and you become a
part of one of his quests the community as a whole benefits, it is with this sense of gratitude
that the citizens of Collier County can encompass the vision of Thomas S. Monaghan and thank
him for his contributions to the County.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that
May 24, 2011 be designated as
THOMAS S. MONAGHAN DAY
