National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of
Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, nicknamed "The l.ady with the l.amp':
during the Crimean War she was a 'ministering angel' working in the war hospitals, and as it was
described, 'as her slender form glides quietly along each corridor, every poor fellow's face
softens with gratitude at the sight of her. When all the medical officers have retired for the
night and silence and darkness has settled down upon those miles of prostrate sick, she may be
observed alone, with a little lamp in her hand, making her solitary rounds':' and,
nursing is often described as an art and a science and is a profession that embraces dedicated
people with varied interests, strengths, and passions, all demonstrating that core belief of the
knowledge that in helping people in the many different aspects of nursing, it provides a valuable
service to society; and,
this year the theme of the week is "Nurses Trusted to Care" recognizing the nearly 3.1 million
registered nurses in the United States comprise our nation's largest health care profession,
with a depth and breadth of registered nursing professionals that meet the different and
emerging health care needs of the American population in a wide range of settings,' and,
The American Nurses Association, as the voice for the registered nurses of this country, is
working to chart a new course for a healthy nation that relies on increasing delivery of primary
and preventive health care, with a renewed emphasis on primary and preventive health care
that will require the better utilization of all of our nation's registered nursing resources; and,
the American Nurses Association has declared the week of May 6 through 12 as NA 7TONAl.
NURSES WEEK with the theme Nurses Trusted to Care in celebration of the ways in which
registered nurses strive to provide safe and high quality patient care and map out the way to
improve our health care system.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that May
6 through May 12, 2011 be designated as
NATIONAL NURSES WEEK
and that the residents of Collier County celebrate registered nursing's accomplishments and
efforts to improve our health care system and show our appreciation for the nation's registered
nurses not just during this week, but at every opportunity throughout the year
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 10th Day of May, 2011.
