WHEREAS, Parkinson s Disease is a progressive neurological movement disorder of the
central nervous system, which has a unique impact on each patient; and,
WHEREAS, symptoms include slowness, tremor, difficulty with balance and speech,
rigidity, cognitive and memory problems, as well as non-motor symptoms; and,
WHEREAS, according to the Parkinsons Action Network, National Parkinsons Foundation,
Parkinsons Disease Foundation, the American Parkinson s Disease Association,
and the National Institutes of Health, there are approximately 1.5 million
people in the United States that art! diagnosed with Parkinsons; and,
WHEREAS, increased education and research are needed to help find more effective
treatments with less side effects and ultimately a cure for Parkinson s
Disease; and,
WHEREAS, a multidisciplinary approach to Parkinsons Disease patient care includes local
Wellness, Support and Care Partner Groups,' and,
WHEREAS, there currently is no cure for Parkinsons Disease; and,
WHEREAS, April has been proclaimed Worldwide Parkinsons Disease Awareness Month
for all to recognize the need for research and help dealing with the
devastating effects of Parkinsons disease.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier
County, Florida, that April, 2011 be designated as
WORLD WIDE PARKINSOWS DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 26th Day of April, 2011.
