Backup Documents 05/22/2012 Item # 4EPROCLAMA TIONE WHEREAS, Trauma Awareness month is designed to raise regional attention to trauma and what must be done to reduce the devastating impact of traumatic injuries; and, WHEREAS, almost 1 in 13 Floridians suffer non -fatal traumatic injury every year, • and WHEREAS, trauma is the leading cause of death for all Floridians between the ages of 1 and 44 every year with someone in Florida being traumatically injured every 12 minutes, and, WHEREAS, traumatic in juries cause more childhood deaths than all other causes and account for one half of all deaths among adolescents in Florida every year; and, WHEREAS, motor vehicle crashes and falls and the resulting blunt force trauma make up more than 80% of all trauma cases treated in our trauma district each year, • and, WHEREAS, in 2011 more than 2,200 Florida residents and visitors in our Lee County Trauma Services District area were treated at the trauma center at Lee Memorial Hospital; and, WHEREAS, national studies show that patient mortality is reduced by 15 - 20% when the patient is treated for traumatic injuries in a Trauma Center rather than in a non - trauma center,• and, WHEREAS, when serious traumatic in juries occur, the collaboration of our trauma district's continuum -of -care providers and partners ensures rapid transport, prompt treatment and early resuscitation and rehabilitation of the victim reduces the physical, emotional and financial costs incurred by the family, system and state, and WHEREAS, there are more than 1. Z million residents in the Lee County Trauma Services by the only Trauma Center on the Florida Gulf Coast between Tampa and Miami, and, WHEREAS, our Trauma Center, healthcare professionals, educators, industry leaders, government officials and concerned citizens promote greater awareness of traumatic in juries and encourage the adoption of prevention measures and programs, to ensure public awareness of traumatic injuries and community education on injury prevention measures to continue to reduce the trauma mortality rate due to injuries in our trauma district,, and, WHEREAS, recognition is due for our Lee County Trauma Services District for its accomplishments and contributions to improve public welfare by providing quality trauma care for all residents and visitors' in jury prevention outreach, education, and research, disaster preparedness and response, and demonstrating that an effective trauma center saves the lives of our residents and visitors. NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida, that May 2012 be designated as TRAUMA AWARENESS MONTH DONE AND ORDERED THIS 22'd Day of May, 2012.
