WHEREAS, the Vietnam war was fought in the Republic of South Vietnam from 1961 to 1975 and
involved North Vietnamese regular forces and Viet Cong guerrilla forces in armed conflict
with the United States Armed Forces and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam; and,
WHEREAS, the United States become involved because the government wanted to provide direct
military support to the government of South Vietnam against the growing Communist
threat from North Vietnam, and,
WHEREAS, the United States Armed Forces arrived in 1961, reached a peak of 543, 000 troops in
1969 and completed withdrawal on March 30, 1973, and,
WHEREAS, more than 58, 000 members of the United States Armed Forces lost their lives in Vietnam
and more than 150, 000 were wounded; and,
WHEREAS, the establishment of a "Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran's Day" on March 30, 2012 is an
appropriate way to honor the members of the Armed Forces who served in Vietnam; and,
WHEREAS, this day recognizes the contributions of these veterans who served during war and peace,
encourages state and local governments to also establish this day and encourages the
people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies; and,
WHEREAS, the day provides the appreciation Vietnam veterans deserve, but did not receive upon
returning home; demonstrates a resolve that the United States will never again disregard
and denigrate a generation of veterans and promote awareness of the faithful service and
contributions of these veterans.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County, Florida,
that March 30, 2012 be designated as
WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS DAY
to empower communities to support veterans and their families and provide opportunities to successfully
readjust to civilian life.
