WHEREAS, Naples Municipal Airport began operation on December 23, 1943, as the Naples
Airdrome, built to support the notion's War World II effort; and,
WHEREAS, after the war ended, the military transferred the airfield to the City of Naples
and Collier County in 1948; and,
WHEREAS, by 1959, the City had full control of the airport and, in 1969, state legislation
and created the City of Naples Airport Authority to enhance service to users,
improve the image of the community gateway and eliminate financial subsidies paid
by City taxpayers, and,
WHEREAS, Naples Municipal Airport is home to flight schools, air charter operators and
corporate aviation and non -aviation businesses as well as community services such
as fire/rescue, mosquito control and the Collier County Sheriff's Aviation Unit;
and,
WHEREAS, all funds used for the airports operation, maintenance and improvements are
generated from activities at the airport or from federal and state grants with no
support from property tax dollars, and,
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation values the airports economic impact to
the community at more than $273 million annually.
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed by the Board of County Commissioners of Collier County,
Florida, that December 23, 2013 be designated as
NAPLES MUNICIPAL AIRPORT 70TH ANNIVERSARY
DONE AND ORDERED THIS 10th Day of December, 2013.
